10 Fakta Unik Tentang Tsunami

Kata 'Tsunami' berasal dari bahasa Jepang yang artinya 'gelombang pelabuhan'. Tsunami dulu disebut 'gelombang pasang', tetapi istilah tersebut sudah dirubah penggunaannya oleh Ilmuwan.

1. Tsunami terdiri dari serangkaian gelombang yang dikenal sebagai kereta gelombang, bukan gelombang tunggal. Untuk tsunami yang besar, gelombang ini tiba-tiba dan yang pertama tidak selalu yang terbesar.

2. Sebagian besar tsunami disebabkan oleh gempa bumi bawah laut. Gempa bumi berkekuatan 8,0 sebagai penyebab bencana Samoa, menurut US Geological Survey. Sebuah gempa bumi bisa menyebabkan tsunami jika memiliki kekuatan yang cukup & berada di kedalaman air yang memadai.

In a new infrared picture from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, a nebula known as RCW 120 makes a brilliant green “O” against a starry patch of sky.
It may look like a portal to Hell ripped through the fabric of spacetime, but this nebula is actually a bubble of gas and dust that’s formed around an “O” type star, the most massive stellar giants known to exist.

O stars appear blue in visible light and are very hot: Surface temperatures can be higher than 73,340 degrees Fahrenheit (40,727 degrees Celsius).
Because they are so bulky, O stars live fast and die young. Their intense radiation lights up their stellar nurseries shortly after they’re born, and they blow themselves apart as supernovae just a few million years later.

Lunar Eclipse Begins
A partially eclipsed full moon hangs in the evening sky over Belgrade, Serbia, on Wednesday during the start of a total lunar eclipse. The sight heralded the longest and deepest total lunar eclipse seen in more than a decade.
"The path that the moon is taking through Earth's shadow is almost directly through [the shadow's] center, making for the longest possible path and so the longest duration," said Ben Burress, staff astronomer at the Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, California.

Earth's shadow started to darken the moon around 18:22 universal time, or UT (2:22 p.m. eastern time). The period when the moon is completely engulfed in Earth's shadow—known as totality—began at 19:22 UT and lasted for almost two hours.
"The last eclipse that was as long as this one was in 2000, while the next won't be until 2018, so this makes it a somewhat rare event."

Pictures: Biggest Whale Shark "Swarm" Found

You could call it a whale of a "swarm"—the biggest observed gathering of whale sharks was spotted off the coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula (see map) in 2009, according to a recent study. Snapped from a small plane, the above picture shows a white boat (bottom right) amid the fishy gathering.
Usually the oceans' biggest fish—which reach lengths of up to 40 feet (12 meters)—stick to themselves as they cruise the world's tropical waters looking for plankton and other small prey.
But aerial & surface surveys spotted at least 420 of the sharks rubbing fins as they gorged on eggs freshly spawned by little tunny fish, a relative of the mackerel.

"To see a group of that many all in one place was phenomenal—to the point where you couldn't navigate a boat through that without having concern for the fish. That's impressive," said study co-author Mike Maslanka, head of the Nutrition Science Department at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Virginia.

Other organizations that contributed to the study include the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas in Cancún, Mexico; the Center for Shark Research in Sarasota, Florida; the Mexico-based conservation group Project Domino; and Atlanta's Georgia Aquarium.
"It doesn't go understated that they're not small animals," added Maslanka, whose study was published in April in the journal PLoS ONE. "You don't realize how big they are until you're swimming beside them or you pull a boat up next to them."

The edge of the solar system may be a frothy sea of giant magnetic "bubbles," a new NASA study says.

The new findings may mean that our system's magnetic barrier—once thought to be a smooth shield—may be letting in more harmful cosmic rays and energetic particles than previously thought.
The new "foam zone" theory is based on a computer model created using data from NASA's twin Voyager spacecraft, both launched in 1977 and currently about 10 billion miles (16 billion kilometers) from Earth.

The Ocelot, Really Back From the Brink?

Do you hear a lot about the Ocelot? Hunted for its pelt for hundreds of years, the Ocelot was classified as a vulnerable endangered species until 1996. One look at this still rare animal and the attraction is undeniable but why is it no longer considered endangered?



At one point it was thought that this magnificent animal would become extinct in the wild before the twenty first century. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) placed it on its vulnerable list (known as VU) but since 1996 it has been considered no longer at risk in the wild Ranging from South and Central America up to Mexico – it has even been spotted in Texas. However, this being said, many are still extremely concerned for the future of this gorgeous animal in the wild.

Republik Of Molossia secara geografi berada di dalam negara Amerika Serikat yaitu di Dayton Nevada, jadi negara Molossia dikelilingi oleh negara Amerika Serikat. Negara paling kecil ini di pimpin oleh seorang ditaktor yang bernama Kevin Baugh dimana Kevin ditemani oleh 2 anaknya di negara yang ia proklamirkan 30 tahun silam itu.
